Dr. Abrams has over 30 years’ experience in the fields of psychological, educational, and neuropsychological assessment and psychotherapy, having worked in psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers, public schools, and private practice. In addition to his role in conducting neuropsychological and psychological assessments for children, adolescents, and adults, Dr. Abrams also provides psychotherapy services.

Dr. Abrams is a graduate of the Clinical Psychology program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also has held positions at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center (Boston, MA), McLean Hospital (Belmont, MA), CPC Hospitals (Fremont, CA), and several community mental health centers. Dr. Abrams undertook post-graduate training in neuropsychology at McLean Hospital, where he held a joint McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School Clinical Fellowship.

Neuropsychological testing can provide a detailed understanding of an individual’s learning and behavior in a variety of settings, including at school, at work, at home, and in the community. Different developmental and experiential conditions result in different patterns of strengths and vulnerabilities. Understanding the nature of a difficulty gives an opportunity to develop compensatory strategies and to advocate for appropriate accommodations or services. By integrating neuropsychological data with clinical information from other sources, Dr. Abrams provides recommendations and makes referrals for the services that may better assist the individual in achieving his or her potential. Dr. Abrams also can accompany parents and clients to school meetings to assist in developing Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or Section 504 accommodations.

A significant aspect of Dr. Abrams’ continuing interest and experience also has included the psychological care and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with a broad variety of emotional and interpersonal problems, beyond those that arise in the context of developmental differences or learning-related difficulties.
